“is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness due to the alterations of a protein called dystrophin that helps keep muscle cells intact” (MDA).
Commonality: Rare. Fewer than 200,000 U.S. cases per year.
Duration: Long term diagnosis. Life long disease.
Cure: None….yet.
Affects: anything involving muscles. Also lungs, and heart. Learning and behavior.
What’s affected in the daily routine? the usual choices that most of us have are not an option for some. Such as: the ability to walk or use a wheelchair. Stairs or elevator. Shower sitting or standing. Sometimes there are gray areas because cases are different from one another. But most often requires assistance for most tasks.
